When buying a new PC or laptop one of the most important things that you will need is a display monitor, or also known as the visual display unit. Without monitors, you would not able to see anything that you are doing on the computer so it’s a necessity to have one. The newer LCD monitors use a very fine film transistor liquid crystal display while the older monitors make use of a cathode ray tube for display. When buying a new computer, you will more than likely receive an LCD screen which isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, the LCD monitors have a much better output and resolution.

The size of a monitors screen varies. Generally, a home computer will have monitors ranging from around 15” – 21” and the same normally applies for office and business computers. Most monitors, even the old cathode ray tube monitors can be fully configured using the buttons which can be found at the front of monitors. Such configurations include brightness adjustment, contrast, colour and sometimes even volume which will communicate directly with the computer system.

LCD monitors have many pros when it comes to the pros and cons of monitors. For example, they are very compact and light, there is no flickering and the power consumption is low. For those who play games through their computer system, LCD monitors are almost always preferred. It’s not just desktop computers that use LCD monitors, laptops use LCD monitors too. When you compare and LCD to one of the old monitors you will definitely see the difference in colour and resolution.

Aside the monitors the other important part of a computer is the speakers for audio. Without speakers you would obviously not hear anything. No music, video or anything along these lines. Speakers are inexpensive if you are just looking for a simple set for the home computer. You can expect to pay from as little as £15 - £40. You may also use headphones as an audio input device but this is not always satisfactory.

Many LCD monitors have speakers built on top of the monitor itself. This can be especially useful if you have not got a set of speakers or headphones. The sound quality varies on monitors but it certainly does the job. All you will need to do is connect the jack from the back of the screen with the speakers to the computer tower or laptops audio device and you’ll have sound.
